Frank Ocean // Pyramids
Frank Ocean has been mega-generous today. Not only has he announced that his album will be released on July 17 and is called “channel, Orange”, but he’s also given us a new single in the form of “Pyramids”. It’s basically ten minutes long as well, so you better get out your pen and paper and write that awkward thank you note - y’know, like the one your mum made you write when your auntie gave you those horrible socks at Christmas. Except this track is good of course, so you’ll actually mean it.
I’m so grateful to Frank that for the first time ever I’ve decided to post his soundcloud link instead of uploading my own file. But that’s only because at 9 minutes and 56 seconds, there’s no way I’ll get the song under Tumblr’s 10mb rule, so don’t go feeling too special Mr Ocean. However he can feel special about making this song, because it really is just that.
With layers of sonic synths and a funk driven percussion, “Pyramids” takes us on some crazy journey through all that’s good and pure in music. There’s a number of spacey and atmospheric instrumentals, which almost act as segues, splitting up different sections of the song. It almost sounds like different songs at points, but the theme of Cleopatra working at the pyramid ties it all together. I guess there’s a lot to take in with this song, but the fact that you have to get your head around it that little bit more with each listen makes it all the better.
just listen.
